The Lord of the Rings.
1st Edition, 9th/7th/6th Imps. 1960.
George Allen & Unwin. Hardbacks in paper covered slipcase. Hammond p.98.
Less than 1,000 sets issued.
Slipcases manufactured by Jarrold & Sons. The first batch issued included 9th/7th/6th impressions 1960. The second batch included 10th/7th/6th impressions 1961/1960/1960. The third batch included 10th/7th/7th impressions 1961/1960/1961. Internal dimensions varied with time, meaning that some slipcases fit the books more closely than others.
The 9th Impression 1960 of The Fellowship of the Ring misidentifies itself as the 8th Impression 1960.
This version of the slipcase can be identified by the fact that (unlike other slipcases) it is composed of a single piece of board folded and then stapled together through the top and base panels before the grey paper covering was added, and that inside there are joins running down the centre of the top and base panels.
For full details of this boxed set see the article on The First Boxed Edition of The Lord of the Rings.
