AITB-Banner05 1st Edition. 1961

The Lord of the Rings. 1st Edition. 1960

The Lord of the Rings.
1st Edition, 11th/8th/7th Imps. 1961.
George Allen & Unwin.
Hardbacks in paper covered slipcase.
Hammond p.98.

Between 8,000 and 8,500 sets issued.

Slipcases manufactured by Jarrold & Sons.  Includes a variety of impressions dated 1961 to 1964.  Internal dimensions varied with time, meaning that some slipcases fit the books more closely than others.  A&U asked Jarrolds to produce a tighter fitting slipcase in December 1962.

The 9th Impression 1960 of The Fellowship of the Ring misidentifies itself as the 8th Impression 1960.

This version of the slipcase can be identified by the fact that (unlike earlier slipcases) it is composed of two half slipcases stapled together through the top and base panels before the grey paper covering was added, and that inside there are no joins running down the centre of the top and base panels.
