The map showing A Part of The Shire appears on page 30. The 1980 version of the map of The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age and the Map of Gondor, Rohan and Mordor appear spread over the final pages. Also includes fifty colour illustrations by Alan Lee.

Eleven impressions issued.

Two states seen:

1) Dustwrapper carries the Tolkien Centenary logo on the lower cover.

2) Dustwrapper carries a photograph of Tolkien on the lower cover and slightly modified lettering on the upper cover.

The number of impressions which used the First State of the dustwrapper is unknown, but was no more than three.

The Second State of the dustwrapper was introduced after the Tolkien Centenary - no later than the 4th Impression.

The dustwrapper design was modified again during the 11th Impression.

The First State of the dustwrapper is shown opposite, while the Second State is shown opposite the entry for the BCA Illustrated Edition.
