This is a collection of artwork previously published in a series of calendars by George Allen & Unwin for the years 1974 and 1976-1979.

At least two impressions issued.

The book was revised and amended in 1992 to correct a number of errors. Significant changes include:

1) A brief preface by Christopher Tolkien.

2) Numerous amendments and revisions to Christopher Tolkien’s notes that accompany the illustrations, especially those relating to The Lord of the Rings.

3) Amended titles for the three Rivendell pictures. (Numbers 4, 5 & 6)

4) Pictures 23 (Leaves from the Book of Mazarbul) and 24 (Moria Gate) were re-ordered and re-numbered to bring the two Moria Gate illustrations (22 & 24) together.
