In 1996, HarperCollins stripped the wrappers from the remaining copies of the Grafton Edition and replaced them with a newly designed cover.

This is the (later) Second State of the Grafton Edition.

The First Impression of this Grafton Edition has been seen with two different cover illustrations – the earlier (First) state featuring Roger Garland’s Muster of Rohan, and the later (Second) state featuring John Howe’s The War of the Ring.
