Includes previously unpublished extracts from Tolkien’s academic writings held at the Bodleian Library. These are used, together with episodes from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as an introduction to works of Old English, Middle English and Old Norse literature.

Two states seen, priority as follows:

1) Size: 23.4x15.6cm. The impression number and year are indicated on verso of title page. Issued in 2005 alongside the first hardback edition.

2) Size: 21.6x13.8cm. The impression number and year are NOT indicated on verso of title page. Issued in 2007? The background on the cover is slightly darker than the 1st State and the cover design has been reduced to fit smaller format. The text is identical in size to 1st State, but has been trimmed more closely to achieve the smaller format.
