Notes
Lot 216 (pp.236-7) is a First Edition set of The Lord of the Rings, together with a two page letter to Robert Burchfield, dated 6 November 1954. The lot description includes extracts from the letter discussing the reception given to The Fellowship of the Ring by Tolkien's philological colleagues. The first page is reproduced in a photograph.

The letter is not included in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien (1981).
