The Hobbit features Thror's Map and the Map of Wilderland on the endpapers. Includes five colour illustrations by Tolkien in addition to the black and white Mirkwood illustration and the eight standard black and white illustrations. Also includes a preface excerpted from Christopher Tolkien's foreword to the 50th Anniversary Edition of The Hobbit. The excerpt lacks the illustrations. Also includes Chapter One from The Lord of the Rings.

The History of The Hobbit traces the history of The Hobbit, edited with commentary by John D. Rateliff. It includes a complete unpublished draft version of the story, together with many little-known illustrations and previously unpublished maps by Tolkien. Also recorded are the numerous changes made to the story both before and after publication.
