Tolkien's contribution on pages vii-xli is entitled Prefatory Remarks on Prose Translation of "Beowulf".

Note the slightly different spelling of Finnesburg.

1,259 copies printed. 1,097 copies were bound, but the remaining 162 sets of sheets were destroyed by enemy action in 1940.

The 1st Edition of the translation was published in 1911. Later printings counted the 1940 Edition as the 2nd Impression. Wrenn & Tolkien’s contributions were not included until 1940.

Tolkien's essay was reprinted in The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays (1983) as On Translating Beowulf.
