The title on the upper cover of the First Impression of this edition was printed against the grey background of the illustration, which made the lettering rather indistinct.

This could have been an omission during the printing process, or may not have been noticed until after publication. In either case, it was changed for the Second Impression, where a brown background was added.

The title on the matching edition of the The Lord of the Rings had a white background from the First Impression.
