Foreword by Christopher Tolkien.
50th Anniversary Edition 1987.
Hardback in dustwrapper.
Illustrated by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Page Ref.: pp.61-62.
Features Throrís Map and the Map of Wilderland on the endpapers. Includes five colour illustrations in addition to the eight standard black and white illustrations.
Christopher Tolkienís Foreword reproduces two pages from the manuscript of The Hobbit, together with six further illustrations and several extracts from letters written by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Two impressions were issued:
1st Impression 1987
2nd Impression 1987
The dustwrapper for the First Impression is shown opposite. Note that the red stripe on the bottom right hand corner does not make it to the edge of the upper cover. This was remedied for the Second Impression - see the Guild Publishing Edition for an image.
The change from incomplete to complete red stripe may have taken place part of the way through the First Impression.
A copy of the Second Impression has been seen in a standard dustwrapper (which has a white sun and no red stripe), but it has not been possible to determine if this was as issued.
