Notes
The map showing A Part of The Shire appears on page 26. The 1954 version of the map of The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age is inserted on a fold-out sheet at the rear.

Nine impressions issued before the dustwrapper design was changed again:

7th Impression 1973
8th Impression 1974
9th Impression 1974
10th Impression 1978
11th Impression 1978
12th Impression 1980
13th Impression 1983
14th Impression 1984
15th Impression 1985

Copies of the 7th Impression 1973 have also been seen with the previous style of dustwrapper.

For most impressions the dustwrapper was laminated to give a gloss finish, but this was omitted for the 9th Impression. The 10th Impression saw the introduction of heavier weight paper for the text which increased the thickness of the book by about 5mm.

Some copies have the ISBN for The Two Towers on the dustwrapper. This error was corrected in the 1980s.

Copies of the 15th Impression 1985 have also been seen with the later style of dustwrapper.
