Both priced and unpriced dustwrappers have been seen.

A 4th Impression copy has been seen in price clipped dustwrapper, with new price added on HarperCollins label.

In 1988, Cedric Chivers of Bath bound 120 copies of the 1st Impression for libraries. The binding type is not recorded in Wayne Hammond’s Tolkien bibliography, but was probably hardback.
